Our topic for this term is A Child's War. During this first half term, Sycamore class will be learning all about life in World War I. We will be looking at how World War I, known as 'the war to end all wars' began. We will be learning which countries were involved, what life was like for the soldiers, living in the trenches, and for the families left behind. Our class novel during this half term will be The War Horse.
For the second half term, we will continue with A Child's War but will move our focus and learning to World War II. Again we will look at how the war began, which countries were involved. We will look at how life changed for the children during the war, what it meant to be evacuated and the reasons behind it.
During this term we will visit The Imperial War Museum in Manchester.
During the first half term we will be learning about Properties and Changes in Materials, we will be carrying out a variety of investigations and experiments. We will also be visiting the Science Centre throughout the first half term, this is a fantastic opportunity for the children to be able to work on more advanced investigations.

Homework Club is Thursday 3:15 - 4:15
Homework will be given on a Thursday and will consist of Maths and English. Please could you ensure your child completes their homework over the weekend. Completed homework is due in on Monday morning and those who have forgotten or not completed their homework will be expected to do it in their play or dinnertime. They need to use black pen or pencil. If your child requires extra support they can attend homework club every week.
This year we will be focusing heavily on reading. This is an important life skill and our aim is that all children will develop a love of reading; for interest, education and pleasure.
As a reading school we encourage children to use our school library to borrow books. It is open every lunchtime and after school on Thursdays. Children can also borrow a book from our class library. As with any school property, books need to be returned to school in the same condition as when they took them home. Damage to books must be paid for.
Please can you encourage your child to write a comment in their reading records, these will be checked regularly.
13th January 2020 for 6 weeks - we will be walking to the Science Centre in Oldham.
Trip to The Imperial War Museum at Manchester - date to be confirmed.
We expect a high standard of behaviour at all times. The school expectations, consequences and rewards will be discussed with all children at the beginning of each term. Not following the expectations affects the education of all children in the class and will be taken seriously.
We use several strategies to encourage children to manage their own behaviour and to become positive role models.
In School, we have been talking to the children about keeping safe online. Do you know what your child is doing on the internet?
Were you aware that children cannot join Facebook until they are thirteen?
Please can you find the time to talk with your child about what they are doing online and the potential dangers of inappropriate use. If you require any support with this or suggestions for alternative technology free activities, please ask.
